Born in Hampshire in 1963, Nicolas Fiddian-Green graduated from Wimbledon School of Art after a three year degree course in Sculpture. Engrossed in the horse as a subject and working in marble, he was greatly moved by the power, skill and beauty of the Parthenon frieze and the horse as depicted by the Ancient Greeks.
Nic Fiddian-Green's more spiritual studies are influenced by early Dutch painters such as Roger van den Weyden and Hugo van de Goes as well as the early Renaissance painters Rublev and Cimabue. His work, like theirs, has a simplicity of line and form and expresses a deep purity and love of the subject.
He attended St Martin's School of Art where he learned the skill of casting in bronze. He gained a Diploma in Advanced Lost Wax Casting and has then established his own foundry outside London. Work commissioned in Gozo in 1992 allowed him to open a foundry there too.He then he divided his time between Gozo and England working in the lost wax technique on a variety of projects. The horse being his main subject, captured in a miriad of media.
His first show at the Sladmore in 1999 was an enormous critical and commercial success. A variety of work in hand beaten Lead & Bronze, both equine and spiritual, introduced this young artist to a new audience who responded with enthusiasm. The show travelled to New York where it met with the same reaction.
In all this time, during four one-man exhibitions at the gallery and various overseas shows in between, he has been on a constantly changing journey of exploration of his chosen equine theme. As this has evolved he has had the vision and the courage to make large monumental works in bronze and lead at every stage.
The monumental sculpture "Mawari Horse Drinking" has been unveiled at Marble Arch, London on June 16th 2009.
His June 2009 exhibition at Bruton place will be his first show of new work for over 4 years. Monumental pieces from this exhibition are on show at Glyndebourne Opera House and Woburn Abbey Gardens.
A note from the sculptor :
"In 1983, when I was a student at Chelsea School of Art, I saw the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum for the first time. To me these ancient marble carvings embodied the most refined principles of Greek and Classical Art and it was these from which I drew my formative inspiration. Since that time, I have tried in my own work to capture the skill, vitality, balance and beauty, which is so evident in these Greek carvings."
